Guyana Ex-Soldiers Association (Canada)

Former members of the Guyana Defence Force residing in Canada had a vision, which resulted in the founding of the Guyana Ex-Soldiers Association (Canada) in July 1983. This vision arose due to the camaraderie which was propagated and encouraged during a soldier’s rigorous training. There is always an incessant urge by ex-military personnel to congregate and to share their military experiences, to socialize and to inquire how their former colleagues are faring in civilian life.

The Guyana Ex-Soldiers Association (Canada) is open to all ex-personnel of the British Guiana Volunteer Force, the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana People’s Militia, the Guyana National Service, and members of their immediate families. The objectives of this association are:

  • To foster and promote strong social and economic ties among members and their families.

  • To provide aid to its members in times of need.

  • To maintain contact with other Guyanese ex-military associations around the world as well as Guyanese non-military associations in Canada.

  • To provide a medium to educate its members in financial management, health, and welfare matters.

The Guyanese Canadian Youth Alliance is a Charitable Organization that was registered on October 9, 2007 and has been offering mentorship and tutoring to students primarily in the Scarborough area.

To support, develop and promote the advancement of youth in the community, enabling them to reach their goals and maximize their potentials. Through mentorship, innovative initiatives and an interactive environment the GCYA was able to provide the support needed to help our youth develop and maintain the building blocks for a successful future.

Mandate of the Program
To improve student’s communication skills through teacher/student partnerships. By enhancing student’s vocabulary (verbal/ written comprehension and delivery), the student will be adequately prepared for professional, College and/or University acceptance and other life expectancies.

The program consists of “remedial” assistance in writing, reading, math, and other subjects as needed. There will also be assistance with resume preparation, job interviews, letter writing and other life skills requirements such as improved communications proficiency (oral and written), diversity awareness, anger management, teamwork, grooming, mentoring, and negotiation skills.

We have seen great improvement in students in the areas of Math and English. Students are enthusiastic about the program and are willing to learn. We envision expanding the curriculum to include computer classes and career counseling.

Queen’s College of Guyana Alumni Association (Toronto Chapter)

The Toronto Chapter of the Queen’s College of Guyana Alumni Association was founded in 1991. It is one of several overseas chapters of the Association. Like those of the other chapters, our primary objective is to assist our Alma Mater and its student population in various ways for the purpose of maintaining the standards of excellence for which the School is renowned. Participation in our Chapter's activities helps to foster a sense of meaningful participation and a spirit of camaraderie among alumni residing in Ontario, the rest of Canada and abroad.

Since 1991, our Chapter has provided the School with a variety of electronics, office equipment, musical equipment and music education books, a public address system and miscellaneous items of laboratory equipment. We have equipped the School with wired and wireless networks, servers, desktop and laptop computers, printers and full internet access. A modern intercom system was installed to facilitate communication between the Headmistress’s office and the classrooms and laboratories at QC.

We also contributed to the School's rebuilding fund following the disastrous fire in 1997.
Annual bursaries are awarded to children and grandchildren of our Chapter members as well as to QC graduates to assist them in pursuing post-secondary education at institutions both in and outside Canada. We have also assisted individual students of the School in various other ways from time to time.

In addition, we support charities in our community and abroad. Our contributions to the foregoing amount to tens of thousands of Canadian dollars which we raise by holding various events each year. We also hold non-fundraising events such as Literary and Cultural Presentations, Appreciation Awards and social outings.

Please visit our website at www.qcalumnitoronto.com to learn more about our Chapter's past, current and future activities. Membership enrolment is also facilitated by visiting the site.

Senior Guyanese Friendship Association

In the early 70’s, many senior Guyanese parents were persuaded to travel to Canada (Toronto) to assist their offspring with childcaring, while the younger generation pursued post-secondary education and careers.

In order to stave off home sickness six or seven young women had a vision to establish a social group mostly for their parents.

In 1973, the SGFA was registered in Toronto as a not-for-profit organization embodying a mission statement to “promote Guyanese culture among Senior Citizens from Guyana and the Canadian community. To accomplish the mission, the Association assists, educates, trains and retrains members of the SGFA by methods as the association may see fit, including the operation of workshops, training sessions and seminars etc.

We also established contact with Nursing Homes in our Homeland, Guyana, and have adopted “The Palms” as the place to liaison with, and from time to time we endeavour to send donations to assist residents of the home with personal needs.

The St. Joseph Alumni Association – Toronto Chapter was formed in 1988. It is one of three active Chapters. This Association was created by a few past students, who resided in Toronto, Ontario and who saw the need for assisting the student body and our school in our native Guyana.

Our primary objective, to enhance the development of the school and St. Joseph’s students, is met by fundraising activities presented during the year. Together with the two other Chapters, (USA and Guyana), we collaborate in meeting the needs as indicated by the Board of Governors and the Past Students of St. Joseph (Guyana Chapter).

Our Chapter has successfully hosted two international Triennial Reunions in the years: 2006 and 2015. In 2013 we celebrated our 25th Anniversary, at which past Presidents were recognized. These events were well attended by many past students and friends — both local and international.

The Committee to Assist Buxton/ Friendship (COTAB)

The Committee to Assist Buxton/ Friendship (COTAB) is a non-profit community group. It was established in 2000 and registered in 2003 with the explicit intention to provide assistance to economic, education, and sports projects that have the potential to contribute to the development of Buxton/Friendship and its people. The Committee reference may be a misnomer. COTAB intends to enlist all Buxtonians in the Greater Toronto area to duty.

Further, there is nothing in its constitution that excludes Buxtonians outside the GTA area, friends of Buxtonians, or any other non-Buxtonians from becoming members. COTAB intends to use strategies that will maximize its intake with minimal economic and time investments, and, strategies that will earn public confidence. COTAB also intends to collaborate with other community groups for projects that are mutually beneficial.
